William Ellis at The Richard Goodall Gallery, Opening 20 May

William Ellis, one of the world’s leading music photographers, was commissioned over 18 months ago by The Bridgewater Hall to capture the artistic life of this leading concert venue. Given exclusive access to many of the Hall’s artistis, William has photographed performers both live and backstage. The result is a compelling collection of images which reflect the diversity of the Hall’s programming, capture the essence of live performance and provide a glimpse behind the scenes at one of the coutnry’s finest music venues.

Amongst the artists photographed are Elbow and the Halle, Christy Moore, Beverly Knight, Buddy Guy, Buena Vista Social Club, Herbie Hancock, Jack Jones, KD Land and Liza Minnelli.

THE ART OF JOHN LENNON 24th November – 12th December

Some of you may have heard of the Beatles. You may recall that this small-time, little-known global phenomenon of a band included a man by the name of John Lennon. Ok ok, I’ll stop being ironic and get to the exciting point. From the 19th November, The Richard Goodall Gallery will be exhibiting a collection of Lennon’s art which will offer art collectors and Beatles fans alike the chance to view around 50 pieces by the artist, including eleven original drawings on loan from Yoko Ono. Presenting a unique insight into the life of Lennon, this collection is an opportunity to see first-hand the significant role which art played in this musician’s life.

Before achieving worldwide fame with the Beatles – one of the most successful bands in music history – Lennon had in fact set out on the road to becoming an artist. For three years (1957 – 1960) he attended the Liverpool Art Institute, and though the Beatles soon became more than a full-time occupation, John never abandoned his love of drawing.

Lennon had been collecting and preserving drawings which he felt were particularly important throughout his life, and it was from this collection that Yoko Ono began releasing limited edition fine art prints following her husband’s death. With the aim of establishing John as a significant artist of his time, many of the subsequently released images have now become iconic.

Primarily working in pencil, pen or Japanese Sumi Ink, Lennon’s drawings are ‘signed’ using a patented stamp known as a chop, often used by artists in the Orient. The stamp, reading “Like a Cloud. Beautiful Sound” was applied by Lennon himself to each edition. Each limited edition print on sale at the exhibition displays this unique hallmark.

New Exhibition – Artist and Repertoire – Drawings by Mike Smith, head of Columbia Records, 19th October

Not content with being, as he puts it, “a kid from Birkenhead who ends up signing a few decent bands and then gets given Columbia Records to run”, Mike Smith is also a pretty brilliant artist. Having drawn inspiration (see what I did there?) from pretty much every gig he’s been to, it’s been our pleasure to wade through thousands of Smith’s images (head of Columbia Records = a whole lot of gigs) to bring together an incredible selection for your viewing delight.

Beginning his illustrious career as a talent scout for MCA Music in 1988, Smith later joined EMI Music in 1992 and rose rapidly through the ranks due to impeccable taste and superlative scouting skills. Having signed Supergrass, Doves, Avalanches, Starsailor, The Libertines, The White Stripes, Gorillaz and Teenage Fan Club before moving on to assume his current role as MD of Columbia Records, it seems Smith is something of a talent guru. Did I mention he’s also an artist? A really good one?

Produced as fine art prints, the collection for this exclusive exhibition spans 20 years of musical magic and includes the likes of Bob Dylan, Blur, Faithless, Elbow, The Doves, Kasabian, The Gorillaz and many more besides.

Ray Caesar, Art London Fair 8-12 October Royal Hospital Chelsea

Art London 2009 is just around the corner! This celebrated art fair has had its sights firmly set on affable accessibility since its conception in 1991 – “serious” art abounds, but Art London brings with it a friendly welcome often lacking in your [scary] high-brow events. As one antiques magazine puts it “Art London is a fair that could teach the others a trick or two…”

And so to London! With a mind-bending Ray Caesar solo exhibition, The Richard Goodall Gallery will be showing brand new pieces created exclusively for the event by this wonderfully weird creator. The final pieces of Ray’s older editions will also be available, and visitors will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase the artist’s proofs of long sold out images.

London-born Ray Caesar is the creator of otherworldly digital images which are at once grim and hopeful; alien and familiar. Children are a mainstay of his creations – having worked for 17 years in The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ray has previously remarked “it is clear to me that this is the birthplace of all my imagery.” Fascinatingly futuristic yet curiously familiar, Caesar’s images are a journey into an unnervingly beautiful enigma.

From the 4^th September we’ll be opening the doors on a brand new exhibition – Manchester: Looking for the Light Through the Pouring Rain. A celebration of Manchester’s unparalleled status in pop history, the exhibition offers a definitive photographic history of the Manchester music scene from 1976 to the present day through the stunning photography of Kevin Cummins.

Featuring some of the most iconic music photography of all time, the exhibition pays tribute to this great city’s finest protégés – Joy Division, Oasis, Buzzcocks, New Order, The Smiths, The Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses – from the legendary Hacienda dancefloor to a rented room in Whalley Range, Kevin Cummins’ exquisite photography is a testament to this great city’s unparalleled musical kudos.

For those of you that don’t know Mike Smith is the head of Columbia Records. He is also a very accomplished artist. He has been drawing forever, at pretty much every show he’s been to, and he’s been to a lot.

We are very proud to have the first exhibition of the art of Mike Smith in October at Richard Goodall Gallery High Street. Featuring a selection of his images from the last 20 years, produced as fine art prints.

This is an event not to be missed.

More coming in the following weeks, we have just done the final image selection from literally thousands of images for the exhibition.

Ray Caesar Burlesque Event April 21st

To end the current Ray Caesar exhibition at Richard Goodall Gallery we are holding a very special one night only event.

Three of the finest performers and stars of Burlesque Fanny Divine, Lola Pops and Daison Merriere.

The girls will be modelling outfits based on Ray Caesar’s images, presented by Kiku, the Manchester corsetry boutique.

This series of new works consist the largest pieces to date by Caesar. The oversize pieces transport us to the weird and wonderful world inhabited by Caesar’s impossible creations. Intricate and engrossing, disturbing yet beautiful.

Also on view will be the final pieces of Caesar’s previous works, exclusively available from the gallery. His work is highly sought after and is in the collections of many famous collectors and institutions.
