Mark Seliger In My Stairwell October 2007

MARK SELIGER’S ‘IN MY STAIRWELL’ PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW AT RICHARD GOODALL GALLERY – 26TH OCTOBER – 24TH NOVEMBER 2007

Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester is to present In My Stairwell by internationally renowned photographer Mark Seliger from 25th October 2007 to 24th November 2007. The show features portraits of iconic figures from the world of arts and entertainments, all shot against the backdrop of the bare brick stairwell. Fifty-five In My Stairwell portraits will be on sale at the Richard Goodall Gallery show, all of which are also featured in Seliger’s 2005 book of the same name.

The portraits that comprise In My Stairwell are platinum palladium prints that feature the subject in an exposed, pre-war brick elevator shaft of Seliger’s New York loft studio. Shot against this raw canvas is a veritable "Who's Who" of international celebrities, such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, Philip Glass, Ben Harper, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Iman, Mick Jagger, Jeff Koons, Lenny Kravitz, Paul McCartney, Lou Reed, Keith Richards, Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, Jerry Seinfeld and Bruce Springsteen.

Seliger's project aims to be a record of current times, with the stairwell environment being the common denominator that relates the subjects to one another. "The stairwell was one of the most honest places in which I had ever photographed," says Seliger. "Subjects had the freedom to become whatever they wanted and everything that happened was equally relevant."

This is the first time that the In My Stairwell show has been presented in the UK. Richard Goodall, who has curated the show, says: ”There’s no doubt that the stark visual theme of In My Stairwell adds cohesion and strength to the mood of the portraits. This is the second show we’ve done with Mark and we’re delighted to welcome him back”.

Mark Seliger lives and works in New York City and is acclaimed for his portrait photography. He works extensively for leading publications, including Vanity Fair and GQ. Seliger was the Chief Photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine from 1992-2002, for which he shot nearly 200 covers.
