Ray Caeser Ipso Facto September 7 2007

Artist Ray Caesar is to feature in a major UK exhibition of his digital paintings from September 6th to October 11th at The Richard Goodall Gallery, Manchester. The show marks the publication of Caesar’s first printed collection of work in his book entitled ‘Art Volume One’. Caesar, Toronto based, but London born, has gained a reputation for creating fantastical images of otherworldly children, and his work is fast becoming much sought after.

Caesar worked as an architect before becoming a special effects artist in TV and film. He then spent 17 years working in a Children’s hospital where he first turned to creating art. Caesar, who cites Dali and Vargas among his influences, says that he paints pictures of the human soul – made with love and blood.

Around 50 images will be on exhibit at The Richard Goodall Gallery, with no work being in a limited edition of greater than 20. All prints are presented in specially commissioned frames. Many of Caesar’s works are completely sold out, so the UK show represents a real opportunity for contemporary art collectors.

Stylistically, Caesar’s art is unique. He works entirely in digital format, from creation to printing, first creating models in 3D software, and then covering the models with painted and manipulated photographic textures that wrap around the ‘skeleton’. Caesar has used an astonishing array of textures in his paintings including skin textures, fabrics and natural surfaces. He says of himself: “I collect textures like other people collect little silver spoons.”

Richard Goodall, an early champion of Caesar’s work, is confident that the full exhibition will attract a lot of interest: “When it comes to contemporary art, Ray is in a category of his own. He’s also a very unusual character who among other things claims on his website that he was born a dog. The show promises to be surreal in every sense.”
