Manchester Evening News Kendra Binney
LAST time I went to Richard Goodall gallery, I ended up walking out with a rather large purchase, I wasn’t expecting to buy.

The truth was (and I can’t blame the shop assistants), I couldn’t resist the pull of Diana Sudyka’s slightly melancholy prints. So I bought it for a present, for me, erm... boyfriend.

Now, I’m anticipating the opening of the gallery’s forthcoming exhibition of another Stateside-based talent later this month. But this time I will be holding my purse-strings tight. Not because the slightly moody work of Kendra Binney isn’t striking but because my purse is already somewhat forlorn, all on its own.

But the exhibition of Kendra Binney’s work, ‘Frail’, which opens on March 28, certainly promises to be intriguing. Unlike the playful, slightly dark humour of bold poster artists like Jay Ryan, the work is a more sensitive and eerie collection of paintings by an Arizona-based artist playing out her fascination with nature – the small, the beautiful, the strange and the cruel.

Kendra’s paintings, which are simultaneously fairytale, child-like and more than a little unsettling, feature imaginary creatures emerging from over-grown grass. Huge, seemingly dislodged eyes like teardrops seem to leak across the greys and blues of the canvas. She works in pastel washes, which she covers with thick resin, creating an eerie glaze.

As if trying to deliberately temp me, Gallery Curator Richard Goodall has said: “Kendra Binney is an exceptional talent; her works cannot fail to capture the imagination of all who come across the hauntingly beautiful creations’.

“Previous works by Binney at the Richard Goodall Gallery have sold out and demand is soaring for pieces by this formerly undiscovered artist.”

Ah, demand is soaring… so perhaps I could tell myself this is an investment? Shut up purse.

The exhibition will be held at Richard Goodall Gallery: Underground, 59 Thomas Street, Manchester, M4 1NA Tel: 0161 832 3435. See www.richardgoodallgallery.com for more information.
