It reached the # 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and held that position for four consecutive weeks earning a Gold Record. That same year, it won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Song and for Best R&B Vocal Performance. It ranks # 6 on the BMI Top 100 Songs and has reached over seven million broadcast performances. In 1982, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson covered the song and received a Grammy Nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group. Michael Bolton's version of the song in 1988 reached # 11 on the charts. The original of this piece was authentically handwritten and illustrated by Steve Cropper.
